Study Vocabulary Effectively
1.Vocabulary learning is an important skill for communication.
These suggestions can help you learn vocabulary effectively :
- Read, read and read. The more words you will learn.
- Use the new vocabulary whenever and wherever it is possible.
- Become familiar with the dictionary entries and be aware that there are multiple meanings for words.
- Use the techniques and strategies suggested later to find out and remember the meaning of words.
2- Tips and techniques to boost your vocabulary:
a- Use context. Consider this sentence about humour:
A lot of people believe humour hampers performance at work and school.
The word ‘hamper’ might be a difficult word. But, if we use the context in which the word appears, we might guess its meaning. Context can provide a synonym, an antonym, a definition, or a description of the word.
b- Use the structure and form of words.
Knowing the parts of words-prefixes, roots, suffixes-helps you understand the meaning of whole families of words. Study and complete this chart.

c- Use classification processes.
Classify the vocabulary in categories and charts to help you learn and remember it.
d- Use association processes.
Associate words together to make collocations or Phrases that are easy to remember. Associate an Idea or a part of the word with its Meaning. Associate words with pictures.

e- Use a dictionary.
To find exactly what a word means look it up in the dictionary. You may find a variety of definitions for a word; go back to the original context in the reading text in this unit to be certain to choose the appropriate sense or meaning
