Punctuation
Full Stop
We use a full stop (also called period) to put an end to affirmative sentences
e.g. I do shopping every weekend.
We also use a full stop to end orders.
e.g. let me alone.
Exclamation Mark
We use an exclamation mark at the end of a surprised exclamation .It is usually starting with ‘how’ or ‘what’
e.g. How terrible! What awful!
We also use an exclamation mark at the end of a wish.
e.g. Good luck!
Question Mark
We use questions mark at the end of a question
e.g. how are you?
We also use questions mark after question tags
e.g You are false, aren't you?
We can use questions mark at the end of a request
e.g. Could you give me the pen, please?
Comma
Commas have a number of different uses in English. Commas are used to Separate a list of items. This is one of the most common uses of a comma. Notice that a comma is inserted before the conjunction 'and' which comes before the final element of a list
e.g. I like speaking, listening to music, watching tv, and visiting my friends
Colon
We use a colon for two purposes:
First, to provide additional details and explanation
e.g. He had many reasons for joining the sport club: to get in shape, to make new, to colleagues, to lose some weight, and to get out of the house
Second, to introduce a direct quote (a comma can also be used in this case).
e.g. she informed her friends: "I'm going to get married |
