Countries and Nationalities
- Generally we don’t use “the” with the name of most countries , but there are some exceptions , e.g. The USA , The United Kingdom, The United Arab Emirates.
- With some countries , we can either use “the” or without it, e.g. “the” Sudan, “the” Ukraine, “the” Lebanon
- Adjectives referring to countries and languages:
…ish : British, Spanish , Irish ,Danish ,Turkish, Finnish, Welsh, Scottish, Swedish
…ic : Arabic , Icelandic
…(i)an : Australian, Austrian, Brazilian, Egyptian, German, Mexican, American, Canadian
…ese : Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese ,Maltese , Taiwanese
… i : Iraqi, Israeli, Kuwaiti ,Pakistani
Others: Dutch, Swiss, French , Greek
- When you tell someone your nationality you do not say: My nationality is American , but say : I am American.
