The past perfect continuous is used in the following cases:
- To talk about an action that was occurring over a period of time in the past.
e.g. He is angry, he had been waiting her for hours.
- To talk about an action that had been happening finished in the past before another past action.
e.g. I had been waiting for two hours when she finally came.
We had been preparing dinner before Dane arrived.
Mike had been living in New York for more than a year before he left to Los Angeles.
