The past continuous is used in the following cases:
- To express an action that was going on at a particular time in the past.
e.g. last Sunday at 9 O’clock I was watching a documentary about healthcare.
At the time of robbery, we were playing video games upstairs.
- To talk about two actions that are going on over the same period of time.
e.g. While john was watching TV , Mary was cooking.
- To show that something happened in the middle of an action.
e.g. I was injured when I was repairing my car.
It began to snow while we were playing football.
