Countable and Uncountable Nouns


 

There are two categories of nouns in English :

 

1.Countable Nouns 

  • They refer to nouns which we can count.
  • They have a singular and a plural.
  • They can be preceded by the indefinite articles a , an (in singular) , also by number , some, many, several …etc. ( in plural).

 

book ,  idea , house , view , wish , car ,song …etc.

 

There is a blue car in front of our house.

There are many books  in the library.

I want two sandwiches.

 

            2. Uncountable Nouns

  • They refer to sets of objects , substance , concepts..etc. which we can not count.
  • They don’t have plural.
  • They can be preceded by zero article , some , any ,a bit of , a piece of , a slice of , a bar of , an item of , a bottle of ,a glass of ,a jar ,a packet of. 

 

water , tea , information , furniture ,bread , mone , dirt , milk , advice ,help ,hope , peace , work…etc

 

The baby needs some milk..

I want some food.

A piece of information

Can you please give me a glass of water.

A jar of jam.

My father refused to give me any money

 

            3. Countable and Uncountable

  • Certain nouns can be used as countable and also as uncountable , with a change of meaning.

I have got three chickens in my garden

Are we having chicken for lunch ?

 

There is a hair in our coffee .

Your hair is tall.

 

Do you have a paper to read (newspaper) .

I want to write some ltters , do you have some paper.
