Past Perfect
- Form: I/We/You/They had played
He/ She/It had played
Had + P.P
- When two actions are in the past and one precedes the other , the first in time is put in the past perfect.

The past perfect is used in the following cases:
- To talk about things that was completed before a past action.
e.g. He didn’t go to bed until he had done his homework
- To say what we wanted or hoped to do , but didn’t.
e.g. I had wanted to go with you to the stadium , but my mother was very sick.
I had hoped to leave the party earlier , but they persuaded me to stay
- To describe a period of time leading up to a past time.
e.g. By 1945 , the WWII had finished.
- To report what people had said
“Jack broke his leg yesterday”
He said that Jack had broken his leg the day before.
- The past perfect is used with: after , before , until, till, as soon as…etc.
